The Apostles' Creed

I was discussing the good things of God with my brother. We always have the most interesting conversations. We were talking about one of my previous posts and he asked me why I used the terms "Heretic and Deviant" when I described myself. Well to be honest it is partly to provoke conversation about the TRUTH of the word of God, not some side doctrine. But it is also because at times after listening to some ministers I begin to think maybe I am a "heretic" because I don't line up with their ideology and they're ministers of the gosple.

During our conversation, my brother brought up the Apostles Creed and he asked if I knew what it was. I know the creed and have read it in many churches statement of beliefs, but it had been a long time since I had read the original creed. So, after the conversation I had to revisit the creed and found something interesting.

The creed has several versions, depending on whether you are Catholic or not. Now I have nothing against Catholics, we are all part of the body of Christ. But in the Catholic version of the creed they add "Catholic" between 'holy" and "Church" which could mean that according to their creed the Catholic Church is the only Body of Christ.

Now I know that not all Catholic's believe this anymore as they once did but that is their version of the Apostles Creed. I went looking on the net for the creed and found that the creed is based on "The Old Roman Symbol" which is dated to the 2nd Century. Apparently they would ask questions to people who were about to baptised. The Old Roman Symbol is translated to English as follows:

I believe in God the Father almighty;
and in Christ Jesus His only Son, our Lord,
Who was born from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
Who under Pontius Pilate was crucified and buried,
on the third day rose again from the dead,
ascended to heaven,
sits at the right hand of the Father,
whence He will come to judge the living and the dead;
and in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Church,
the remission of sins,
the resurrection of the flesh
(the life everlasting).

This needs no changing or modifying at all. This is the basis of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Gosple in a nutshell. Paul even simplified it more by saying "I believe in Christ and Him crucified." Read it for yourselves.

It just doesn't get any simpler than that.

If it gets confusing just go back to the basics. Christ and him crucified.

Good post, one thing I may point out the word "Catholic" according to the dictionary means:
"universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all.
3. pertaining to the whole Christian body or church." I believe now that most Catholic's (not all) would say that God's true Church is ALL Catholics and Protestants would be the true body of Christ.

I would hope so. The book of Hebrews specifically spells out the priesthood of the believer.

Amen!! Isn't it amazing how God so plainly laid it out there for us to follow. And how man has so panifully messed it up...
